If you are pregnant or a new mom then you probably learned the same lesson I did…HORMONES DO CRAZY THINGS TO YOUR BODY!!!! I don’t think I was mentally prepared for all the body changes I would be going through besides the getting bigger part and I definitely didn’t know I was going to change my whole beauty routine because of it.
Lets start with your hair. When you are pregnant the first thing you will notice is how your hair will get thicker and how much faster it will grow. This is a catch 22 because yes you will have a beautiful mane but you will be shaving A LOT more often. But what happens to all that hair when you’re not pregnant? Well to put it simple it ALL falls out! Some people will notice a light shedding while others have lost so much they have little bald spots. It all depends on hormones and genetics I believe. I am now at 4 months post partum and realizing a lot of my hair is coming out when I condition in the shower and I am finding it all over my clothes, pillows, and even the baby!!!
Enter Mane and Tail Shampoo and Conditioner…
Yes yes yes, I know what you are thinking…but this is for horses! Well it is lol but growing up on a horse farm I can tell you this stuff is a little hidden beauty GEM! Many people, as well as myself, swear by this product to make your hair more shiny and to grow longer and stronger as well as help with hair loss. It also smells AMAZING too. I mean have you ever checked out a horses mane and tail and how thick, long, and gorgeous it is! Many hair extensions are made out of horse hair as well! BONUS: It is super cheap!!!
Next up…your face!
So the funny thing about pregnancy is that you can live your whole life without acne, get preggo, and then BOOM acne EVERYWHERE!!! Or some people who have suffered with acne there whole lives will either see it completely disappear or get worst. In my case it got worst UGH! So I went on a mad preggo lady spree to find the best products to help control my worsening acne break outs that included some lovely chin cystic acne and these were the best products I found for my oily/combo skin.
Purchase Clean and Clear Deep Action Scrub Facial Wash
Purchase Olay Complete All Day Facial Moisturizer With Sunscreen SPF 15 Combination/Oily Skin
Purchase Freeman Feeling Beautiful Peel-Away Clay Mask Sweet Tea & Lemon
Before you decide to go out and just buy anything and try it for your acne make sure you read the ingredient labels. I know at first I was using products that were not safe for baby or to use while breastfeeding when I first started to find something that works for me. I never really thought about what ingredients were seeping into my blood stream through my skin because I was only thinking about what I put in my mouth that was bad. The ingredients to completely avoid are Salicylic Acid and Retinoids such as Retin-A, Renova (tretinoin), Accutane, Retinoic acid, Retinol, Retinyl linoleate, Retinyl palmitate. Also I must state some essential oils should not be taken into precaution although they do not pose a huge health risk like the other two above. If you use essential oils in your routine or planning to please consult your doctor to make sure it is safe.
Moisturizing your face and applying sunscreen is very important during pregnancy because you want to protect that little bundle from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Also your skin is more prone to being burnt while pregnant and dark spots do become a problem for some while pregnant and after because of hormones. I also used the peel-a-way mask once to twice a week to help clean out my pores and shrink them. It also made my skin feel totally soft and gave it a nice glow.
So what about your body?
So let me break down some truth about stretch marks…you either get them or you don’t and if you do get them there’s two reasons with the first one being just plain old grumpy genetics. The second reason is you might not have moisturized enough to help the skin stretch without ripping which is basically what a stretch mark is.
Now that clarification is out of the way, there is 2 simple things you can do daily to help prevent those lines if it’s that important to you. Exfoliating scrubs and a nice moisturizing lotion. Just like with the face was you have to be careful what you put on your body. Scrubs help slew off all that dead skin which in return helps the skin stay moisturized and elastic but many scrubs contain essential oils that are to not be used while pregnant or breastfeeding. The one I have listed above is a little pricey but is safe to use during and after pregnancy. You can use salt or sugar scrubs but sugar tends to be the better option because salt can dry the skin out and make you even more itchy and tight feeling.
I can not emphasize enough how important it is to use lotion all over your body during pregnancy. Not only to help prevent skin stretching but also to help with the itchys because they will happen! Palmer’s is like an old friend and many generations have used it. It also smells super delicious kinda like a chocolate bar smell. It is very moisturizing so much so that I would sweat after applying if I took a hot shower or was having a hot flash but it was worth it because it made my skin super soft and really helped with reigning in my developing stretch marks. Another product you can use if the itch is just too much and this doesn’t help is Eucerin or Aveeno.
Having a baby is a roller coaster but is a journey I will never regret. Always remember the changes to your body are not forever unless you let them be and to always take good care of the vessel your little one is being held in because everything you do effects them. Don’t fret if you do end up with stretch marks…I think of them as warrior mama kitty tiger stripes lol!
I am not a doctor and in no way have worked in a medical field. Please consult with your OB or Midwife before using any products you are not sure about and remember every body and pregnancy is different…thank you hormones for that!
