Blog Author Spotlight
I am so excited to start this new monthly series on To Give And Get! If it weren’t for all the other amazing bloggers out there, I wouldn’t be who I am today. Lisa Koivu is no exception and that is why she is my first author on my spotlight.
Lisa runs the site Oh, She Blogs! and it is such an amazing resource for bloggers everywhere. I discovered her when I first started blogging a year ago and I swear I can contribute a lot of my success from her posts of tips, tricks, and resources! I am also an avid newsletter subscriber for here and literally read every email she has sent since signing up. One of my favorite posts by her is 5 Awesome Resources to Make Blogging Easier.
Are you thinking about starting a blog, are you a newbie blogger, or just seeking to fine tune your craft? Oh, She Blogs! is the site for you! She is also very engaged with her readers so don’t be afraid to contact her with any questions you have and check her out on social media.
1 Everyone has a story. Why did you decide to start Oh, She Blogs!? Is this your first blog?
Oh gosh, no! I launched my “main” blog, ShopGirlDaily.com back in 2009 (then fantabulouslyfrugal.com), when I had some free time and needed a hobby. I became interested in affiliate marketing within two weeks of starting that blog and haven’t looked back since!
I’ve been thinking about starting Oh, She Blogs! for a few years and finally in January I decided that I just needed to go for it, otherwise, I’d be thinking about it forever! The reason I wanted to start the site was to focus specifically on blog monetization. I love seeing others make money from their blogs, but it can be a confusing landscape to navigate at first so I wanted to create a site that would (hopefully) help people realize that while it definitely takes time to make money blogging (it’s not possible to be an overnight success), that it’s also something that ANYONE can do.
2 I know “Interneting” takes up a lot of our time. What do you like to do in your spare time when you’re not blogging?
If you had asked me this three years ago, before I quit my day job, I would have said that all I did in my free time was work on my blog. (And honestly – that’s why I was able to quit my job.) Over the past couple of years, though, I had a son and I’m pregnant with another child, so now my priorities have shifted a bit and my free time is mostly spent with my family and our two dogs, reading the occasional book, binge watching Gilmore Girls, or planning our next vacation.
3 Winter time sometimes has me dreaming of being somewhere else. If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I could write an entire novel about this, but currently, the place I most want to visit is the Galapagos Islands. I could look at pictures of the animals calling the islands home for hours on end! Our very tentative plan is to go in about 10 years when our kids will be old enough to enjoy and remember the trip!
4 Tis’ the season to be jolly! What is your favorite thing about the holidays?
So much! I love that everyone just seems happier and are more likely, at least here in Chicago, to share smiles, I love holiday commercials (so weird, I know!), I love Christmas carols, I love the Starbucks holiday menu, and I love that we get to spend extra time with friends and family.
5 I have found so much useful stuff on your blog this past year. What is the #1 tip you would give someone who is thinking about starting a blog?
Stop thinking and go for it! I see so many people in Facebook groups talking about how they can’t launch their blogs until they have the perfect design, or they have a DSLR camera, or they’ve paid for self-hosting or they have a year’s worth of content. That’s simply not true. If you want to start a blog, the #1 thing you need to do is start it. Write your first post and hit publish. Here’s the thing: You’re never going to be 100% happy with your blog – and that’s OK! You have forever to work toward your version of perfection. But if you spend so much time at the beginning trying to make things perfect, then chances are you will get burnt out before you ever really begin.
6 What is your favorite social platform to use?
My blogging secret? I really don’t like social media!
I know, I know… It’s just that I started blogging before most of these social media sites existed and life – and blogging – were so much easier then. I love writing but my weakness is definitely sharing parts of my life on social platforms, especially since it’s my rule to not share photos of my family. If I absolutely had to pick one, I’d probably say that I really enjoy some of the discussions I find in some Facebook Groups.
7 Star Wars: Rogue One comes out this month and I am super excited! Are you a big movie fan? If so, what are your top 3 favorite movies?
Since our son was born we haven’t gotten out to see many movies because hiring a babysitter is so expensive! That said, we started a tradition where each January we all check into a hotel for a night and watch that year’s Oscar-nominated movies via Pay Per View. It’s probably not cheaper than hiring a babysitter so we can go see a movie, but it’s a lot of fun!
Historically, three of my favorite movies are:
Sweet Home Alabama
Before Sunrise followed by Before Sunset (I consider these basically one movie)
The Sound of Music
8 I blog a lot about beauty on To Give And Get. Do you have a favorite beauty product?
A few of the products I can’t live without include the Living Proof Curl line, Miss Jessie’s Quick Curls, First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream, and pretty much any mascara. I’m a beauty product junkie and love trying out the new products I receive in my Ipsy bag each month!
Personally, I find promotion to be the hardest part of blogging. I could write all day and night and never run out of things to write about, but they say that blogging should be 20% writing and 80% promotion. If only those ratios were reversed I’d be golden!
10 We all have that one post that just shimmers out of all the rest. What post on Oh, She Blogs! are you the most proud of?
When I started the site I vowed to always tell it like it is, at least in my opinion, and not do something just for a pay day. So the post I’m most proud of is the one I wrote about how much Bluehost Sucks. Don’t get me wrong, I think some bloggers DO have a good relationship with Bluehost, but it seems that more and more bloggers that don’t even use Bluehost are promoting them because they have an incredible affiliate payout. (Some bloggers receive $150 per new signup – if not more – while most web hosts “only” pay $50 per signup.) While Bluehost is budget-friendly, their service, both in terms of downtime and customer service, can be downright awful. I hate when I see bloggers in Facebook groups complaining about how terrible Bluehost is and wondering why so many prominent bloggers recommend them. There are tons of great hosts out there. Bluehost isn’t one of them.
